FAQ : When I put the OmniBook 4000 in "hibernate" mode, why do I get a "PhoenixMiser" error message saying that it is impossible to go in suspend mode?
Answer : This problem can occur in two situations:
  • You have formatted the hard drive and made a new partition with "FDISK".
  • You have added an extra memory module.
The Omnibook 4000 has a special partition for the "hibernate" function. It actually saves the contents of the RAM memory to a special partition on the hard drive, so when booting up the next time, you will return exactly to the point you were before hibernating the PC.

To make the hibernate function work again, you will have to create a new partition. Be aware that this operation will cause a lost of all data on your hard drive. Restart the PC with the "Omnibook 4000 Companion Disk" in the floppy drive. Go to A:\DOS and launch the FDISK application. Remove all partitions. Restart the PC again from the diskette. Go to A:\OMNIBOOK and launch the PHDISK application and create a new hibernate partition. Restart the PC again from the diskette and launch FDISK once more. Now create a primary DOS partition. FDISK will also recognise a "non DOS partition", which is the special hibernate partition. Now you can reinstall the operating system. Back

FAQ : Can I upgrade the processor of my OmniBook?
Answer : The Omnibook's processor is soldered to the system board, so replacement with another model is not possible. Back

Answer : Download and install BIOS version 2.12.90 or later from the HP Electronic Support Center on the Internet Back

Answer : Passwords can be discrambled by authorised personnel at the European Customer Support Center. For safety purposes, you will be asked to submit a proof of purchase. Back

Answer : For the OmniBook 5000 For complete power off, unplug the unit from continuous power and press concurrently the CTRL-ALT-POWER (blue on/off button) keys.

For complete power off, unplug the unit from continuous power and press concurrently the CTRL-ALT-POWER (blue on/off button) keys.
BIOS update 2.10 (or later) allows the user to completely power down the unit when running on continuous power. Physically, you still have to press the CTRL-ALT-Power (blue on/off button) keys to do so, or if running Windows 95, go to Start/Shutdown on the task bar.

FAQ : I want to upgrade to Windows 95 on my OmniBook 600. Do I need to load any extra drivers?
Answer : To install Windows 95, you will have to load the latest bios version 4.01 together with a driver update. Back
FAQ : When I shut down Windows 95 the OmniBook hangs at the text "Please wait while windows is shutting down your PC". What can I do?
Answer : Check if the correct mouse driver has been installed. Go to taskbar in Windows 95 and click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Mouse, General. You should see "(Standard) PS/2 Compatible Mouse". If this is not the case, please change it accordingly. Virus checking programs or memory resident programs can also prevent Windows 95 from shutting down. Check that no items are being loaded in the "C:\windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" folder or in the "load=" or "run=" lines of the file "win.ini".
Be sure no real mode DOS drivers (e.g. for the network card, CD-ROM drive or sound card) are being loaded in "autoexec.bat" and "config.sys".
Check that you have the latest bios version.

FAQ : Can I install Windows 95, Windows NT or other Operating Systems on my OmniBook?
Answer : All OmniBooks come preloaded with an operating system. That is the only operating system that is supported by HP. Most OmniBooks have been certified for other operating systems as well though: OmniBook 300/425/430/530 - Dos/Windows 3.1x
OmniBook 600, 800, 4000, 5000, 5500, 5700 - Dos/Windows 3.1x/Windows 95

Support should be obtained from the manufacturer of the operating system.

FAQ : How can I get the original software back on the OmniBook in case I have to reinstall it?
Answer : Older OmniBooks that did not come with a recovery CD-ROM containing the preloaded operating system and the necessary drivers, have an application for creating master disks of the preloaded system. You should always create these disks as soon as possible. When reinstalling the software you should use these. In case you did not make a back-up, a reload of the original software can be done at the HP Service Center in your country. This is a fee based service. A recovery CD-ROM is also available as an orderable part: F1081-12011 for the OmniBook 4000 and F1065-12017 for the OmniBook 600. Back
