Simple Technology Flash Cards and the Omnibook

Specific card at issue is:
40MB flash (STI-ATA/40)
16MB Compact FLash

(Thanks to Bill Vickerman, Longden Loo)

With most flash cards no drivers are normally needed using the default Windows 95 installed drivers.

Sundisk cards are correctly seen and registered in the ControlPanel, System, DeviceManager, HardDiskControllers as a "Sundisk ATA Flashdisk".

However, the Simple Tech cards trigger Windows 95 to install an additonal "standard ide/esdi hard disk controller" driver (besides the one thats installed).

The new entry however, has an exclamation mark on the icon and under properties, general, device_status gives the message
"this device is not present, not working properly......".

This is how the entry looks both before and after a system reboot.

The Properties, Resource tab for the card's will show:
"standard ide/esdi hard disk controller"
"no conflicts", and resource_type are:

io range 0170-0177
io range 0376-0377
int req 09

The solution to make the card recognized is to go into:

ControlPanel, System, DeviceManager, HardDiskControllers, Properties, Resource and:

- Uncheck "use automatic settings"

- Set "setting based on" field to "basic configuration 0004" (the default is 0000 or 0001).

Note: This changes the "resouce settings" from two
Input/Output ranges to only one, and lets you modify it.

- Double click the Input/Output range and change the value from the default "0000-000F" to "0110-011F", then OK.

- At this point, the Simple card is recognizable by Explorer.

One again I'd like to thank Bill Vickerman and Longden Loo for this great tip.
