HP OMNIBOOK 300, 425, AND 430 - INSTALLING KERMIT PROTOCOL SOFTWARE

  ISSUE:HP OmniBook 300, 425, and 430 - installing Kermit

              protocol software.

SOLUTION:Kermit is a file transfer protocol developed by

Columbia University that is available for many

computers, including the IBM PC family. Kermit is

capable of emulating several terminal types depending

              on the version being used.

The Kermit protocol can be used for communications

between the HP OmniBook 300, 425, and 430, the HP 100LX

Palmtop, and the HP 95LX Palmtop. The HP 100LX and

95LX Palmtops have Kermit protocol built into ROM.

However, Kermit must be installed on the HP OmniBook

300, 425, and 430 to allow them to communicate with

other computers using Kermit, including the HP 100LX or

              95LX Palmtops.

Copies of Kermit may be obtained by contacting Columbia

University at the address and phone number listed

below. (Kermit is also widely available on many

              electronic bulletin boards.)

The following steps provide information on installing

the Kermit file transfer protocol software onto the HP

              OmniBook 300, 425, and 430.

NOTE:An active LapLink Remote connection must

be established between the HP OmniBook

                    300, 425, and 430 and a desktop PC in

order to proceed with the following

                    steps. For assistance with installing

and using LapLink Remote with a PC,

refer to the HP OmniBook Operating Guide

                    pages 2-7 and 11-7.

  INSTALLING KERMIT

              1. Attach a serial cable between the PC and the HP

                 OmniBook 300, 425, or 430.

              2. On the HP OmniBook 300, 425, or 430, press the [Fn]

and [F9] keys simultaneously. Musical tones will

sound if the link between the HP OmniBook 300, 425,

or 430 and the PC was successful. (Consult the HP

OmniBook Operating Guide if you are experiencing

                 difficulties.)

              3. Place the Kermit installation disks into a flexible

                 disk drive on the PC.

              4. On the PC, run the installation program to install

Kermit on the PC's fixed disk.

              5. Copy the whole Kermit directory from the PC's fixed

disk to the C drive of the HP OmniBook 300, 425, or

430 (note the drive letters on the PC that

correspond to the HP OmniBook 300, 425, or 430's C

                 drive).

The Kermit protocol is now installed on the HP OmniBook

300, 425, or 430. For a complete reference to Kermit

commands, please refer to Kermit, a file transfer

protocol by Frank da Cruz from Digital Press.
