HP SMS MIF Generator Readme File ================================= Please read this file before continuing the installation process. This file covers the following topics: o Terms used o Goals o Software requirements o Installing HP SMS MIF Generator o Controlling the execution of SMSWIN 1.1 TERMS USED _______________ SMS : Microsoft's Systems Management Server DMI : Desktop Management Interface MIF : Management Information Format DMTF: Desktop Management Task Force. A consortium of 12 companies defining standards to manage desktops. The DMTF defined a set of APIs to access to basic informations in a standard way (DMI) and a description language to standardize the description of manageable objects (MIF). The complete DMI specifications can be obtained through the DMTF FTP server (ftp.dmtf.org) or through the DMTF Web Page (www.dmtf.org) 1.2 GOALS __________ When the SMS Inventory Agent runs on a SMS computer, it reports the inventory to an SMS logon server as a binary file. This file contains the computer's inventory in the MIF format. Microsoft's SMS uses an inventory process common to all PC manufacturers. Your HP OmniBook NoteBook PC has extended capabilities such as security features which are not reported by the standard SMS inventory tool. The goal of SMSWIN.EXE is to export in the SMS Database the complete HP OmniBook's feature set. 1.3 SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS _________________________ The software configuration required to run HP SMS MIF Generator program is : o The HP DMI instrumentation must be installed on your desktop. If it's not, open the HP DMI group (or folder) and run the SETUP program. If unfortunately you removed the HP DMI folder from your desktop, you can retrieve the HP TopTools client installation files from the \OMNIBOOK\DRIVERS\XX\DMI directory of your hard disk or the HP OmniBook Recovery CD (if supplied). Remember to substitute WIN95 or NT40 for XX depending on the current OS. o Your desktop must be manageable by Microsoft's SMS. SMSWIN.EXE automatically detects if the SMS client agent has been installed on your desktop. It does not run if your desktop does not belong to an SMS site or is not a HP OmniBook NoteBook PC. o SMSWIN.EXE supports the following operating systems: - Windows 3.11, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 - Windows 95 - Windows NT Version 3.51 or higher 1.4 INSTALLING HP SMS MIF Generator _____________________________________ SMSWIN.EXE is automatically installed when you run SETUP.EXE. If your desktop belongs to an SMS site, the SMSWIN program is automatically launched when you log in. If your desktop is not manageable by SMS, SMSWIN is only added to your HP DMI group/folder. 1.5 CONTROLLING THE EXECUTION OF SMSWIN ________________________________________ By default SMSWIN runs once a week. It scans the DMI database and generates the SMS MIF file corresponding to your configuration. This can take several minutes. If you don't change your desktop configuration very often, you can modify SMSWIN's schedule by editing the file SMSWIN.INI located in the same directory than SMSWIN.EXE. The file SMSWIN.INI controls the execution of SMSWIN.EXE. If it is not present, default values will be used. There are two sections in SMSWIN.INI: 1. [SmsWin] //contains scheduling information frequency = valid values are: hourly daily weekly monthly yearly SMSWIN.EXE will be run as soon as the unit associated with the period changes. e.g. if frequency is yearly and you run SMSWIN on Dec 31 1995 and again on Jan 01 1996 then it will do a scan both times because it last ran in 1995 and the year is now 1996. It will not however run again until 1997. last =
